Dear Friend,
Many of you are no doubt busy making plans for the summer: family reunions, backyard BBQs or a day at the beach. I’d like to invite you to include helping the students of UNIQUE Learning Center DC as a part of your summer plans.
The ULC Summer Program is a six week, immersive learning experience for more than 30 youth, ages K-12, from D.C.'s inner city. Our staff is working hard on developing quality programming for our kids that will include individualized and group lessons for reading, math, writing, geography and science.
Summer is our most critical time with our students. Recent studies have shown that at-risk children experience a high degree of summer learning loss. Without creative ways of stimulating our students' minds over the summer months, many will lose the academic gains they made during the school year.
Our high school students will have the opportunity to intern at a local business which will give them valuable work experience as well as a source of summer income. Financial literacy will be taught as they establish savings accounts, deposit half of their earnings and account for their weekly spending trends.
At the end of the summer each student will earn a week of summer camp that we operate in conjunction with Open Door Presbyterian Church. The week of camp gives our kids positive recreational outlets that promote a healthy lifestyle and provides us a significant opportunity to minister to them before they return to school.
As you make your plans this summer, I urge you to consider reaching, touching and changing the life of a child from UNIQUE Learning Center and broadening his or her life experience. It will be one of the most meaningful things you can do this summer!
Sincerely,
Sherry Woods, Director
